Rickshaws, an Asian Icon

Rickshaws

The term “rickshaw” is essentially an anglicized version of jinrikisha, the Japanese word for this human-powered vehicle. Although it is difficult to determine who actually invented it, most sources state that the rickshaw was created in Tokyo in 1869 by a man named Yosuke Izumi. Rickshaws became so popular that they spread to neighboring Asian countries. Contrary to popular belief, these elegant wooden vehicles were not reserved for the nobility. For decades, they were in fact the main means of transportation in Japan, as they were more affordable than horse-drawn carriages and automobiles.
